Thanks for your interest

We appreciate your interest in our organization and hope you choose to join if you qualify. Take a moment to read through the brief articles on this page, they provide basic information to help you learn about the Federal Optometric Society. Who Can Join?

You can join the FOS if you are or ever were a federally-employed optometrist or if you are currently attending optometry school on a federal scholarship. Qualifying federal service includes time spent as an optometrist serving in any of the Armed Forces or any federal optometry Civil Service position. For more information, look in the membership section.

How Do I Join?

First, congratulations on your decision to join the Federal Optometric Society. There are just a few things you need to do to join the organization - you have to register, decide whether or not you want to be a Founding Member, and then pay your membership dues.

Simply click on the register link at the top of the page, fill out the demographic information, and submit your registration request. You will then receive an activation link at the email you used to register on the site. Click on that link to activate your registration, and then wait for admin approval. The registration form requires you to declare your service affiliation(s). If the site administrators can easily confirm your information, your registration will be quickly approved and you'll receive an approval message by email. You can then log on to the site.

Once inside, you'll have access to several members-only areas, which include the check out cart where you'll go to pay your membership dues and other fees. The FOS only accepts payment via PayPal or by credit card. We apologize if this inconveniences you, but the volunteer nature of this organization requires heavily streamlined processes that are as automated as possible, and manual collection of dues and conference fees are labor-intensive tasks.

How Much Does It Cost?

Membership dues depend on your employment status and are reduced for qualifying membership in other organizations. There is a temporary, optional Founding Member category for people interested in helping the organization get off to a good start. For the first year of the organization, members may choose to join as a Founding Member at a rate of $200. Renewals will then be at the normal member rate, minus any discounts.

Membership dues for ODs in active practice are $100 per year. Dues are $65 for ODs who have retired and do not actively practice optometry. ODs currently working in a federal residency program (residents) pay $40 per year, and optometry students on federal scholarships pay no dues.

There is a discount of $25 for members who also maintain membership in any other national optometry professional association. This information is summarized in the table on the bottom of the membership page.

Why Should I Join?

Members will have access to top-quality, low-cost, COPE-approved CE during FOS sponsored meetings. The FOS will also offer Mentorship Education (ME) and Professional Education (PE).  These tracks will target members at various milestones in their careers to offer advice through prepared lectures and member interaction.

Our annual meeting will coincide with the annual meeting of the American Academy of Optometry, so  members will have plenty of opportunity to earn their required CE hours if they decide to attend an ME or PE lecture or two.

To the greatest extent possible, our lecturers will be members. This provides speaking, leadership, and mentorship opportunities to our members.
