Federal Service Optometrists Have A New Organization

COLUMBUS, GA, January 30, 2012. The newly created Federal Optometric Society (FOS) announced today it has begun accepting memberships from the pool of qualifying optometrists with current or past federal optometry service.

LTC James Auvil, O.D., M.B.A., F.A.A.O. is the organization’s founder and its initial Executive Director. He stated, “The FOS is unique among optometry organizations – it exists only to serve its members, all of whom must have a qualifying connection to federal service as an optometrist. It answers to no other organization and is more inclusive than any other federal optometry association or society.”

According to Dr. Auvil, optometrists currently employed by the federal government, such as active duty military or civil service optometrists, can join the FOS, as well as those with former federal optometry service. Some contracted optometrists also qualify, as do federally-sponsored optometry students and doctors participating in federal service residency programs.

Among other things, the FOS plans to offer continuing education courses for its members, as well as mentorship and professional education courses. It is organized to represent each of the federal services and will seek advice and recommendations from an Advisory Council consisting of leaders and representatives from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Veterans Administration and Public Health Service/Indian Health Service.

“Beginning a new organization is a lot of hard work,” Dr. Auvil said, “but creating an independent organization to represent federal ODs is well worth the effort. I look forward to growing the FOS membership and I’m excited to help them build something truly extraordinary.”

The FOS plans to hold its first board meeting in Atlanta, GA at the end of February and will begin planning the first annual meeting, currently scheduled for October 2012 in Phoenix, Arizona. More information is available on the FOS website at http://theFOS.org.
