Executive Summary

The Federal Optometric Society is a non-profit mutual benefit corporation founded to serve its member doctors. The vision is for the FOS to become the premier, in-house venue for federal service optometrists to share their knowledge through member-taught COPE-approved continuing education, member-taught mentorship education and member-taught professional education.

The FOS has no political purpose and will not lobby any organization, candidate or political party.  The FOS is legally bound to provisions in the Articles of Incorporation which includes in Article IV, "...The corporation shall not participate in, or intervene in (including the publication or distribution of statements) any political campaign on behalf of any candidate for public office.  The corporation shall not lobby Congress or any State, nor shall the corporation pay any other entity to lobby Congress or any State."

The FOS answers to no other organization and is not affiliated with any other organization whatsoever.  Membership is based on qualifying federal service as an optometrist or optometry student.  Membership in other organizations is not required for membership in the FOS, however FOS members are encouraged to be active in the profession.  The FOS is the only professional optometry association to reward members for being actively engaged in the profession by offering discounted dues to those who maintain active memberships in other national optometry professional associations.

The FOS does not seek to replace the Armed Forces Optometric Society (AFOS) or the National Association of Veterans Affairs Optometrists (NAVAO). Membership in these organizations is not mutually exclusive, and it is wholly appropriate for federal service optometrists to join one, two, all or none.  Members of the FOS board of directors maintain various membership combinations within these three organizations, including the Executive Director.  To the greatest practical extent, the FOS will plan meetings and events so as not to conflict with meetings and events of other groups.

The FOS has nothing to do with board certification.  Members are free to seek or avoid board certification as it has no bearing on the purpose or goals of the FOS.

The Federal Optometric Society is a nonprofit mutual benefit corporation organized and operated to promote the professional interests of its members as contemplated by Section 501(c)(6) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986.

The FOS was formed in Boston in October 2011 as a completely independent organization to serve current and former federally employed optometrists.  It is the premier in-house venue for federal ODs to share their knowledge.

The legal start date of the FOS was 30 DEC 2011.
